Barrie YMCA
Barrie YMCA
The Barrie YMCA has a long standing singles league that has players from 12 to 61 years of age, and skill levels from “D” through “A”. At present there are approximately 32 players in the league, and that tends to increase in numbers as the fall season progresses.
The format of the league is a bit unusual, but very effective in ensuring that everyone has competitive games. The league consists of levels, with 4 players in each level. During each session every player must play every other player in that level. Players are awarded 3 points if they win the match 2 games straight, or 1 point per game to the winner if the match goes to tie breaker.
At the end of the session the player in a given level with the most points moves up to the next level, and the lowest player in points drops to the level below. As you can see, a player will quickly rise or drop to the level where they are most competitive.
If you are interested in joining this league, you can contact the Barrie YMCA at 705-726-6421 and they will pass your name and phone number onto the league coordinator.
Carol Minotti has organized the RB house league for this fall. It consists of 30 players divided into 4 levels. This league started in October and run through to the beginning of Dec.
Many of us know each other from the old 'Fit for Life' at Kennedy and Sheppard so I notified as many of them as I could but the sign-up was also posted at Pickering in the hopes that other existing members / players would be interested in joining us so we would get enough people to form a league.
This league is only 9 weeks including playoffs so that we could assess the levels of the players to see if they were in their correct level. I hope to do a 'double' league next time where you would play each opponent 2 times instead of once.
The schedule, the players in each level and a match results sheet are posted on the RB bulletin board. The schedule and the contact information (names, phone #'s and e-mail addresses) were forwarded via e-mail and copies had also been left at the front desk for those without e-mail.
The only hitch with this league is the fact that you have to book your own court instead of having courts blocked booked. This has taken away some of the feel of a league. You know you will meet up with other league players on certain evenings but there are currently only 2 courts available at Pickering. If we are allowed to block book in the future, the league players will have to become members.
